Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris are the same grape, just named differently depending on their growing origin. Both the word grigio and gris means grey. This color depicts the color of the grapes on the vine. This grape can vary dramatically. Many Pinot Grigio wines are simple, light, 'patio sipping' wines. On the other hand, many producers go out of their way to create intense and dramatic wines.
